The university has established a high-profile research group in ultra precision surfaces, which, with colleagues from Cambridge, UCL and Cranfield, is developing prototype mirrors for the world’s largest optical telescope, the 38m European Extremely Large Telescope. The university has also set up new research groups in composite materials engineering and in psychology, both with a strong international profile. Coupled with the appointment of new professors in other areas, including business and nursing, the university now has leading research across all subject areas.
