The National Skills Academy for Nuclear (NSAN) is pleased to announce Dr Dame Sue Ion DBE FREng FRS as our new Honorary President.
Dr Ion is one of the UK’s foremost nuclear engineers. She has chaired the EU Euratom Science and Technology Committee since 2010, and has represented the UK on a number of international committees as an expert on nuclear fuel cycle engineering and manufacture technology. In June 2016 Dr Ion was named in the Top 50 Influential Women in Engineering list published by the Daily Telegraph.

“To have such an esteemed figure head for NSAN is indeed a huge honour for us. I am sure that Dr Dame Sue Ion will be a great credit to our organisation and will be an excellent Ambassador for NSAN and the whole nuclear skills agenda. Dr Ion’s involvement in supporting and promoting educational programs and gender diversity in the sector will enhance the work of NSAN.
Dr Dame Sue Ion is the second Honorary President of NSAN following the retirement of Lord Patrick Jenkin in December 2015. The whole team were very saddened to hear of the passing of Lord Jenkin last month. Lord Jenkin was an excellent champion for NSAN and the nuclear industry.”

Proactive pursuit of the skills agenda is vital for the success of our growing nuclear sector and has been a key focus for me personally over a number of years.”
NSAN is an industry led organisation that is dedicated to the skills for nuclear agenda. NSAN’s primary focus is to improve the performance of companies in the nuclear industry through collaboration and action on skills. Currently celebrating its 10th anniversary throughout 2017, NSAN has established a number of skills initiatives for the nuclear industry including bursaries, an industry shared online learning portal – The Nuclear Training Network, the NS4P (an online system that houses the agreed Competence Framework for the sector and provides an innovative tool for those working in the industry to assess, verify and record an individual’s competence, training and qualifications) and a wide range of industry training courses and programmes.
NSAN has a fundamental role in supporting the sector to meet the goals set out in the government’s nuclear sector skills strategy ‘Sustaining our Nuclear Skills’, and built on in the industry’s Nuclear Skills Strategic Plan published December 2016 by the NSSG. These goals include:
- Aspire to meet 90% of the sector’s skill demands from the UK workforce by developing the right pipeline of skills.
- Ensure the nuclear workforce’s expertise is unsurpassed globally by developing training programmes of the highest quality.
- Cultivate a more diverse nuclear workforce, including by increasing the proportion of the sector’s workforce who are women to 40%
